about

These tracks will give you a taste of the various sounds I evoke in my yoga class accompaniment. They are not, however, an adequate substitute for the live performance, since I believe the value of my art lies in its immediacy and integration in the overall experience of the yoga class.

I would rather see performance and recording as very different art forms, with separate merits - just as theatre and cinema are not treated as flip sides. To that effect, I did not approach the recording of this album as simple documentation of what I do in a yoga class, but instead as a catalogue of moods and textures - a sampler of musical ideas to promote my art, rather than an art product in itself.

That being said, I do think there is some artistic merit to these tracks. The first ten are short-form improvisations, each based on a technique or style I've developed in my exploration of sound, body, and movement. The challenge inherent in the short-form improvisation is that it must begin, develop, and end with sufficient concision and clarity so as to feel complete – and not merely a fragment. Like a haiku, it may suggest something much greater than itself with minimal content, or capture some fleeting essence, but not seem unfinished.

The latter three tracks are longer improvisations, and may be heard sequentially as a single work. I recommend listening in an active focused way, perhaps with dim lighting to minimize the intrusion of the visual realm, to follow the musical ideas as they unfold.

Enjoy, and please consider purchasing this album if you would like to support my artistic aspirations.
